Little-known fact: PET has a lower carbon footprint compared to other packaging materials
PET has a recycling rate similar to that of aluminum and glass, with an 80% lower carbon footprint.
When we talk about plastic, terms such as hygiene, health and convenience come to mind. While plastics improve our quality of life, as consumers and individuals who care about the environment, we have the challenge of properly managing and disposing of those very same plastics we enjoy.
There are different types of plastics. For example, PET, classified as number 1, is the most recyclable, resistant, and safe. Its circularity allows it to be recycled into food containers and packaging, which require the strictest hygiene standards.
While PET has a similar recycling rate to that of aluminum and glass, you might be surprised to know that its carbon footprint is 80% lower than both.
Alpek’s strategy to use and recycle PET has become evident in recent years, with acquisitions such as CarbonLITE in 2021, and the PET sheet business in the Middle East in 2022. This strategy is key to Alpek’s commitment to meet its qualitative and quantitative ESG goals by 2030.
