Biogas versus climate change

Learn how, through innovation, sludge and manure are converted into energy

At Sigma, the commitment to the planet goes beyond food production. The Company believes in a future where the food industry is more sustainable. Its Campofrío Frescos plant, in Burgos, Spain, created a strategic alliance with Biogasnalia for the generation of biogas, which is a renewable fuel used at this site since the end of 2023. The alliance’s main objective is to revalue organic by-products through anaerobic treatment.

This process resulted in the production of 12,000 MWh of energy per year, which represents the migration of 40% of natural gas consumption to biogas and a reduction of 2,100 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Campofrío Frescos uses biogas to generate thermal energy for various activities within the plant such as water heating and cleaning processes.

Sigma is focused on promoting a circular economy and sustainability within the food industry. Additionally, the waste management by Biogasnalia reduces scope 3 carbon emissions, further strengthening environmental responsibility. These initiatives reinforce Sigma’s commitment to innovation, responsible business practices and a tangible contribution to reducing carbon footprint.
